The Best Way to Use Your Professional Network

One of the best avenues through which to conduct your job search is your professional network.  Connections can give you a huge advantage, especially in such a tough job market.  However, given the current job market, it is likely that your employed friends are feeling pressure to find jobs for a number of colleagues.  So if you’re looking to land a job, don’t ask your connections straight out!  In most circumstances, you would do much better asking your colleague for a reference than a job opportunity.

This indirect approach alleviates some of the pressure on your colleague, allowing the two of you to discuss your job search in a more relaxed, informal setting.  Explain why you have asked your colleague for a reference, listing some reasons you respect him or her as a business professional.  Sincere compliments will always work in your favor.  You can also discuss jobs in which you’re interested to provide your colleague with some context for the reference, but doing so might also help your colleague think of an opportunity that fits your skills and interests.  Finally, when your colleague sits down to think about what your reference should include, he or she will think of all the positive attributes you possess and become even more invested in your job search.  Try to build stronger relationships within your network, rather than straining them with burdensome requests.  These relationships can be very powerful in the job search process.
